Project Trees

Everything in a VRGS project is listed in one of three trees in the left panel, each on its own tab:

  • Data — what you bring in: point clouds, meshes, tiled models, images, logs, and the annotations placed on them.
  • Interpretations — what you create on that data: orientations, polylines, faults, surfaces, geopolygons, sections, sketches and flight paths.
  • Collections — the project's shared resources and reference lists: viewpoints, scenes, the facies and log classification schemes, picks, sets, colour maps, backups, HTML pages, scripts and reports.

A fourth tab, SFM, appears when your licence includes photogrammetry. It lists the project's structure-from-motion workflows and is documented in the SfM user guide.

Each tree page in this section lists the branches in the order they appear in the application, says what each one holds and what appears under its items, and links to the reference page for its right-click menu.

What the trees have in common

  • Fixed branches. Each tree has a fixed set of top-level branches (Point Clouds, Orientation, Facies, …). They are always present, even when empty. A few appear only with a licence feature or after signing in; the tree pages say which.
  • Checkbox = visibility. Ticking an item shows it in the 3D view; ticking a branch or folder shows everything under it. Ticking a mesh or point cloud that is not loaded loads it in the background first.
  • Select to see properties. A single click selects an item and shows it in the Properties panel. Right-clicking selects it too before the menu opens.
  • Double-click navigates to the object, or opens it where it has a window of its own — a log, a photograph, an HTML page, a script.
  • Right-click opens the menu for that item. A branch header and the objects under it have different menus, and many branches share the standard item and group menus (Data, Interpretations, Collections).
  • Right-click empty space in any tree to toggle Alternate Row Colours.
  • Folders. Most branches let you organise their contents: select several items and choose Group, or right-click the branch and choose New Sub Group. Folders nest, and a folder can carry its own display settings (Use Own Display Properties) instead of inheriting the branch's.
  • Bold marks the group that currently has focus — the one new interpretations are added to (Set Focus on a group in the Interpretations tree).
  • Badges. Some items carry a badge: Active on the mesh paint layer or MPCDI viewport in use, Filtered on a point-cloud attribute with a filter applied, and load-state badges on large meshes and point clouds.
  • Drag and drop moves items between folders in the Data tree, and pages between field guides in the Collections tree.

The two buttons above each tree expand every branch and refresh the tree from the project. The Interpretations tree also has a branch selector and a Manage Branches button for interpretation version control: only the objects in the selected branch and scenario are listed.

About the reference pages

The right-click reference pages were first generated from the application's menu resources and are now maintained by hand. Menus that the application builds at run time (the mesh surface generators, the field-guide commands, the Reports branch, the transform and calibration lists) are described where they appear.
