Texture Maps Context Menu
Commands available when right-clicking Texture Maps in the Data Tree. Texture maps are image projections applied to 3D mesh surfaces, providing photorealistic appearance by draping photographs or imagery onto geometry.
Projection Management
Update Projection
Menu name: Update Projection
Tooltip Recalculate texture projection onto mesh surface.
What it does Recalculates and updates the texture projection mapping from the texture image onto the associated mesh surface. This regenerates UV coordinates (texture coordinates) that define how the 2D texture image wraps onto the 3D mesh. Useful when mesh geometry has changed or projection parameters need updating.
When to use it
- After editing or refining mesh geometry
- When texture appears misaligned or distorted
- After changing projection parameters
- Following mesh decimation or smoothing operations
Notes
Original texture image and projection type (planar, cylindrical, spherical, camera-based) are preserved. Only the mapping coordinates are recalculated based on current mesh geometry.
Recalculation uses the original projection parameters (camera position for photogrammetry textures, projection plane for orthographic textures). May take time for large meshes with high-resolution textures.
Correct Position
Menu name: Correct Position
Tooltip Interactively adjust texture alignment on mesh.
What it does Opens an interactive dialogue or tool allowing manual adjustment of texture position and alignment on the mesh surface. Provides controls to shift, rotate, or scale the texture projection to achieve better alignment with mesh features. Changes are applied in real-time for visual feedback.
When to use it
- Fine-tuning texture alignment after automatic projection
- Correcting small misalignments between texture and geometry
- Adjusting texture position when automatic methods produce errors
- Aligning textures to specific mesh features
Notes
Typically provides interactive handles or sliders for translation, rotation, and scale. Visual feedback shows texture position updating in real-time. Apply or confirm changes when alignment is satisfactory.
This is a manual correction tool - use after automatic projection has been applied. Particularly useful for photogrammetry textures where camera calibration may have small errors. Corrections are applied to projection parameters, not the texture image itself.
Common adjustment modes:
- Translation: Shift texture in U/V directions
- Rotation: Rotate texture around projection centre
- Scale: Uniformly or non-uniformly scale texture coverage
- Keystone correction: Adjust for perspective distortion
Changes update the projection transformation matrix. Multiple iterations may be needed for optimal alignment. Works best when mesh geometry is accurate - if geometry is incorrect, texture alignment cannot fully compensate.
